DIY…Sazerac?

Sorry to rip off the Wall Street Journal for artsy stuff, but their video on local hackerspot NYCResistor and Brooklyn’s MakerBot Industries (which is producing low-cost 3-D printers) is pretty instructive. A robot at NYCResitor (Downtown Bklyn, near Fulton Mall) makes a Sazerac—a difficult drink to make, even for a human. It involves rinsing the glass [...]

Is Saving Money a….Trend?

Omigosh, they did it again. Citibank was nice to me: or, to be more specific, my local branch. Sometimes you don’t know the right questions to ask. That’s where pro-active, nice people come in. And they exist—even in giant corporations, apparently. But, to find those people, you need to walk in the door, and not be [...]

Is this You?

A screen shot from when I pretended to log in as a NYFA Applicant. Just thought maybe you should see it, in case you are an artist and don’t like to think about deadlines. A quick link to the application for the rest of you, here. Am toying with the idea of doing a quickie writing workshop sometime [...]

Event on September 20th: Traffic Cones are Everywhere. But, have you noticed?

Wanted to mention that Erik Sanner, that new-media artist, will be giving a tour of the East Village—vis-a-vis traffic cones. Yup. You heard me right. Three times on one day, he’ll walk you around and show you how to truly see them: as ad-hod sculpture, as visual phenomena, as…. Well, I don’t know. But go [...]

And the Recycling Award goes too…

Erik Sanner. Artist I’ve known for a while now who works in Harlem. Films and documents everything. Then, puts the footage into his installation/works. Then, films the installations and probably re-inserts that footage into a work soon-to-be-near-You. You get the idea. Went to his two-person show at Dutch Kills Gallery in LIC over the summer. (Nice [...]

Entrepreneurship: It’s creative, right?

…though it’s kind of fishy to most of us “I’m-too-high-minded-to-make-any-money” artsy types. That said: Ralph, the woodworker we mentioned a few weeks ago, starts selling $13 lobster rolls from his storefront store on Columbia St. in Red Hook next week. This photo from Lost City, who seem to be addicted to buying such treats at the Brooklyn [...]

Process Notes: How’d she do that, you ask?

Claire Corey. An artist whose been working in computer-based media for years–like, even before it was popular. The answer to this question is really complex. So, shall we just quote from her recent e-mail? “…[I make these] small paintings using found imagery on the Internet [as well as] photos I take myself which I combine into a [...]

Process Notes: you fold the paper in half…

A recent drawing by Daniel Davidson. Check out the symmetry. How does he do it? Draws on one half of a piece of paper. Wets it, folds it over, and burnishes the other half. Voila. Process does the work for you. His show opens at the ever-intriguing, very watchable LES gallery Sloan Fine Art on September 16th.

Creativity in the Workplace: Recession Inspiration in Bklyn

The Red Hook Lobster Pound is actually the brainchild/business venture of a woodworker, named Ralph, who has his shop next door. What’s cool is the artfulness with which he does both activities: He builds furniture out of recycled wood in his shop; and for his “store” he’s constructed a platform of wooden, rubber-lined tubs (kind [...]
