Journalism 101 as artist’s statement-writing strategy
Strategy Moment:
I owe this insight to Jean Shin, a marvelous sculptor (who’s got a nice profile in this month’s Sculpture Magazine, btw.) Why not just stick to the basic interview questions journalists use when trying to talk about your work?
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW?
Ask them of the artwork; you can even interview it as if it [...]

Why they don’t teach you how to write a decent artist’s statement in Grad School
I’ve thought about this, having gone to grad school (Pratt Institute) and gotten an MFA in painting—and come out with zero instruction from my professors on the art market and how I might find my own voice in it. That, I did for myself.
Since then, I’ve gotten past the rage (mostly) and have come to [...]

Critic writes half-ass artist’s statement on a paper bag at Cafe Grumpy
My friend (if he still is my friend), Kurt Strahm, seems worried that I may not be able to hack writing artists’ statements in 15 minutes at Winkelman this Wednesday; so, I offer to write him one on the spot—only he’ll have to wait ’till after I use the rest room. He insists (to toughen [...]
i will attempt to write artists statements—in real time, at #hashtagclass
You may think it’s hard to endure writing or reading artists’ statements; so please take heart that I’m now turning statement writing into an endurance piece. We shall see if I can come out standing.
Read about the show on the blog, or just come to Winkelman Gallery in Chelsea. I was inspired by Lucy van [...]

State of the Art Statement: Jen Beckman, 20 X 20
One Valerie Roybal has this work featured at Beckman’s 20 X 200 today. Liked it.

Not bad at all, right? Only, here’s the pet peeve of the day: Lists. Of Stuff. Too much Stuff. don’t do it!
Thing is, this is an anomalous example, ’cause clearly Roybal’s work [...]

Artist Statement, the Good/Bad List
People have been asking me for this lately (Hi, Julie, in India!!); so I’ll just re-post it here.
The Artist Statement Writing Workshop, DAC, ‘09
Dunno if I published this, but Amanda (and others) at DAC were kind enough to give me an edited version of the workshop I did there last summer. Sorry, the sound isn’t great. But if you stick with it, it might be humorous, um, educational. The gloss, below, is courtesy of DAC.
Making a Statement from [...]

Last Night at the ol’ Podium
BAC Artists’ Writing Workshop went well. Fluorescent-lit auditorium, large Post-It Notes, and some good, attentive folks, tolerating my version of the real deal when it comes to writing.
I made them do some writing on site. Yikes! But they were game. And, surprise, they wrote really well.
Now, on to more stuff I’d wish we’d had time [...]
