Male abstract artists in…”flower” show, Williamsburg
This sweet site is actually the headquarters of the WG News & Arts: a good spot to have a well-themed art show.
I wrote about this on the newspaper’s blog, and you can check it out here for the details. Fruit stickers; tar; plastic collage; Photoshopped “stamps.” A good mix of media, and hats off to [...]

Mark Skwarek and Will Pappenheimer: AR-tists and Curators
This duo worked hard to put up a show of 20+ AR artists in Williamsburg last month.
Pictured above is a screen image of Skwarek’s work “Parade to Hope” as seen around Lorimer Street in Williamsburg. The parade was last spotted on the BQE going east. Now that I, too, am starting to post in AR, [...]
Meredith Allen was much loved and has passed away today
She will be sorely missed. A beautiful and honest person, who was courageous in the face of her illness; and now, she’s gone. Meredith documented—and contributed to—the Williamsburg art scene indefatigably. She was, I believe, preparing her photos of people and characters from events over the years. I hope to learn more about that soon. [...]

Nelson Bradley’s faux Movie Poster vs. Real Life Williamsburg
A sneak peek from curator Larry Walczak’s upcoming show:
The show’s name is Williamsburg2000, opening in March. It promises to evoke a bygone W’burg-gallery heyday. Here’s a copy of Roberta Smith’s “Brooklyn Haven for Artists Heats Up” from the New York Times, ca. 1998, for added context.

Union Street Outpost: WORK
Interrupting this studio-visit bonanza to say (once again) that Carroll Gardens, proper, has an outpost of art as serendipitously fun as that last studio—and accessible, ’cause it’s a gallery: WORK. At the end of Union Street.
Wandered into the open door this morning. And, in addition to these nifty stools and table altered with wooden ball/dowl-y [...]

An open letter to Ed Winkelman, SVA, Dan Cameron, or anyone in a position to help artists speak Truth to Power: we do need “A New Currency”
No wonder artists have a hard time writing statements. Rebelling against the need to write is the only self-defense/self-preservation mechanism they have left in a system that seeks to compartmentalize them. Do you want funding? [asks the foundation] Explain how what you do fits in with our criteria for what’s worth $. Want me to [...]
Critic writes half-ass artist’s statement on a paper bag at Cafe Grumpy
My friend (if he still is my friend), Kurt Strahm, seems worried that I may not be able to hack writing artists’ statements in 15 minutes at Winkelman this Wednesday; so, I offer to write him one on the spot—only he’ll have to wait ’till after I use the rest room. He insists (to toughen [...]
