the conversation turns to the note that Martha Graham wrote to Agnes DeMille on the role of the artist:
“…there is a vitality, a life force…If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium…It is not your business to determine how good it is; You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.
Keep the channel open.”

Leslie and I never met in person (though I had, indeed, written about a number of her shows in other spaces, before). The fact that she didn’t know me didn’t stop her from saying both those things to me when, the other day, I popped in just before the opening to see her show, “Building Beauty.”

I always figure that Brooklyn galleries are way more homey and pleasant than their (seemingly more professional) counterparts in Manhattan. But Heller proves me wrong.

ArtInfo does Whitney Biennial pre-press Proper

This is the way I like my E-reportage: straight, link-rich, and ordered so well that I can understand it at a glance.
ArtInfo, with reporting from reporters Goldstein, Villas, and Russeth, do it nicely. (I’m guessing with a lot of help for the Museum’s super on-the-ball press agent, Stephen Soba.)

They break it down, geographically (NYC, L.A.) and by age, sorta. You’ll learn how old the picks are (Marianne Vitale, 37, her work, above); who shows where (IBID Projects, London); and get even get links to their websites.

My fave of the NYC ladies, below:

Crowner, 36 shows at Nicelle Beauchene Gallery on the oh-so-glorious LES. I don’t remember seeing her there (much as I like Orchard Street). NO. I read about it Online, as will you.
