One of the favorite things from the Lower East Side last week.
Shiny.

Busy.

Dizzy.

Funny.

<p><a href="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-024428.jpg"><img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-024428.jpg" alt="20110720-024428.jpg" class="alignnone size-full" /></a>the conversation turns to the note that Martha Graham wrote to Agnes DeMille on the role of the artist:<br />
&#8220;&#8230;there is a vitality, a life force&#8230;If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium&#8230;It is not your business to determine how good it is; You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.<br />
Keep the channel open.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025123.jpg"><img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025123.jpg" alt="20110720-025123.jpg" class="alignnone size-full" /></a>On to Michael Mutt Gallery</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025209.jpg"><img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025209.jpg" alt="20110720-025209.jpg" class="alignnone size-full" /></a>what may be the smallest gallery in the City, run by unique, auto-didact artist Mutt, just, well, because he can and wants to.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025353.jpg"><img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025353.jpg" alt="20110720-025353.jpg" class="alignnone size-full" /></a>then, of course, there&#8217;s my personal show record: my notebook, this one of the Gerhard Richter show last year in Midtown</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025610.jpg"><img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025610.jpg" alt="20110720-025610.jpg" class="alignnone size-full" /></a><br />
This, the notes turned into wallpaper at a Bureau on the Lower East Side:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025740.jpg"><img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/20110720-025740.jpg" alt="20110720-025740.jpg" class="alignnone size-full" /></a><br />
Same stuff, different strokes. The unique takes many ( albeit similar) forms.</p>

<p><em>Photo by Israeli artist Oded Hirsch &#8220;50 Blue&#8221; from Heller&#8217;s 2010 summer show</em></p>
<p>Leslie and I never met in person (though I had, indeed, written about a number of her shows in other spaces, before). The fact that she didn&#8217;t know me didn&#8217;t stop her from saying both those things to me when, the other day, I popped in just before the opening to see her show, &#8220;<a href="http://www.lesleyheller.com/artists/building_beauty/index.html">Building Beauty</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p><img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/Grace-Knowlton-Sawhorse-4-at-Heller.jpg" alt="Grace Knowlton, Sawhorse 4, at Heller" title="Grace Knowlton, Sawhorse 4, at Heller" width="150" height="150" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2228" /></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Sawhorse 4,&#8221; Iris Print by Grace Knowlton, in Heller&#8217;s current show<br />
</em></p>
<p>I always figure that Brooklyn galleries are way more homey and pleasant than their (seemingly more professional) counterparts in Manhattan. But Heller proves me wrong.<br />
Brooklyn West?<br />
Hey, it&#8217;s almost faster to go to Orchard Street than it is to go to Williamsburg&#8230;</p>

ArtInfo, with reporting from reporters <a href="http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/33924/whitney-biennial-2010-breakdown-the-new-york-kids/">Goldstein, Villas, and Russeth</a>, do it nicely. (I&#8217;m guessing with a lot of help for the Museum&#8217;s super on-the-ball press agent, Stephen Soba.)<br />
<img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/vitalestill.jpg" alt="vitalestill" title="vitalestill" width="500" height="373" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1454" /></p>
<p>They break it down, geographically (NYC, L.A.) and by age, sorta. You&#8217;ll learn how old the picks are (Marianne Vitale, 37, her work, above); who shows where (IBID Projects, London); and get even get links to their websites.</p>
<p>My fave of the NYC ladies, below:<br />
<img src="http://www.sarahschmerler.com/wp-content/uploads/scrowner0040.jpg" alt="scrowner0040" title="scrowner0040" width="401" height="500" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1455" /><br />
<em>Sarah Crowner, &#8220;Geometric Composition # 7,&#8221; 2009. Oil on sewn canvas, cloth and linen</em>.<br />
Crowner, 36 shows at <a href="http://www.nicellebeauchene.com/gallery.html">Nicelle Beauchene Gallery</a> on the oh-so-glorious <a href="http://art-collecting.com/galleries_ny.htm">LES</a>. I don&#8217;t remember seeing her there (much as I like Orchard Street). NO. I read about it Online, as will you.<br />
Do you think this year&#8217;s Biennial will be&#8230;dare I say it&#8230;good?</p>
